Browse local arts and crafts in a stunning medieval setting
If you fancy a trip further afield, head east. Brougham Hall, just a mile south of Penrith, Cumbria, was built in the 14th century and was derelict until restoration began in the 1980s. It’s now one of the largest country house restoration projects in England, and also home to lots of local artists and their workshops. This includes Mary Chappelhow, whose ceramics you’ll see around The Hazeldene, as well as at our sister restaurant Fellpack Kitchen (indeed, Mary came up with our original “fellpot” design, which we still use to this day).
East of Penrith you’ll also find lots of pretty villages and smaller fells to explore for something a bit different. We recommend the incredible valley High Cup Nick, accessible from Dufton (where there’s a cracking pub, The Stag, for a great after-walk pint!).
